Maple Valley is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 22,684 at the 2010 census.
The area was first settled in 1879 by three men who were improving a trail and brought their families in. When a name for a future community was proposed, the names Vine Maple Valley and Maple Ridge were suggested. A vote was taken by writing the names on slips of paper and placing them in a hat. Vine Maple Valley won by 2/3, but the word 'Vine' was later cut by the post office because it made the name too long.
The town's early history mainly had to do with coal, lumber milling to build homes, and a railroad which ran through town. Coal was brought in from Black Diamond to the south, but the town itself also mined coal from Cedar Mountain. The mine was used as late as 1947. Rail workers for lines like the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Cedar River Watershed, closed off by the City of Seattle, meant more workers for those things. More residents meant more lumber milling. More lumber milling meant more workers.

The organization is an all-volunteerorganization formed over 35 years ago. The goals of the organizationare to teach people about the history of the Greater Maple Valley area, provide a means for people to do research on their heritage, and toshowcase the history of the area through maintaining three (3) museumswith displays of the past. The Society has a paid membership of over 300people and organizations.
The three (3) museums are 1) locatedwithin the King County Landmarked original Maple Valley School of which we will be vacating by the end of 2018 and the other two, on property owned by the City of Maple Valley. Our first museum inthe original Maple Valley School houses the main photo collection of theSociety as well as the primary offices of the Society. There are alsodisplays set up in this museum that depict the early lives of theresidents of the Greater Maple Valley area, as well as a room almostsolely dedicated to the history of the Tahoma School District. The Society has been notified by the Tahoma School District that we must vacate this building by the end of 2018. The Society is therefore in the process of building a storage building for the collection from this building on the site of the other two museums. We are also looking to increase our displays in both of the other museums.
The othertwo museums are located next to the Maple Valley Community Center inthe heart of the City of Maple Valley and are the Gibbon-MezzavillaGeneral Store and the Fire Engine museum. The Gibbon-MezzavillaGeneral Store is the restored original store of the Greater MapleValley area that was frequented by early residents. The Fire Enginemuseum houses the restored 1926 Howard Cooper Fire Engine which was theoriginal Fire Engine used by Fire District 43 Volunteers. In additionto the Howard Cooper, there are displays depicting the early years ofthe Fire District. The Gibbon-Mezzavilla General Store and the Fire Engine Museum are open the first Saturday of eachmonth from 10:00am to 2:00pm or by appointment. The original Maple Valley School Museum is no longer open to the public.
The Society providesa History Treasure Box curriculum for the Tahoma School District thirdgraders. The curriculum provides for guided class tours of all of ourmuseums for the students, teachers and chaperons. Since the program’sinception, we have had more than 1200 students participate in thisprogram.
The Society’s volunteers also provide free publicprograms five (5) times each year. The programs are held at variousfacilities around the Greater Maple Valley area to allow for handicapaccessibility and to generate the most interest by the groups that theprograms are geared too. In particular, the programs are geared to theHistory of Maple Valley, History of Hobart, the annual Tahoma Alumni Picnic and to participate in and have the museumsopen during Maple Valley Days each June. Every 3 months, the Societypublishes the Bugle which provides the membership with informationabout the goings on within the society and historical facts about theGreater Maple Valley area.
The Society has developed a greatworking relationship with the City of Maple Valley. Since the City’sincorporation in 1997, the City has strived to keep the area’sHistorical roots in perspective while still growing and changing. TheCity’s vision statement specifically states that “maintaining historicconnections with the area’s rural past” is necessary. To that end, theCity has provided financial support for the ongoing utility costs andinsurance for the Gibbon-Mezzavilla General Store and the Fire Enginemuseum that reside on their property.
The Society has severalpublications about local history. Many of these have been written bylocal volunteers and are available for sale to the general public atthe museums and during the free public programs. Some of thesepublications include: One Hundred Years Along the Cedar River, Histories of Greater Maple Valley, The CedarRiver, Fire District 43, WWII Veterans from the Tahoma School District, and anecdotal family histories.
