Urban Speed Dating In Watts California
Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumwhr.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sumwhr. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an up and coming independent melodic-songwriter, producer, engineer, and sound architect, born and raised in Watts, California. Growing up in Watts, I turned to basketball to keep myself off the streets. It was only a matter of time before the streets caught up with me but the bright side to that is I got my first introduction to music.
I watched my older brother Trelegend, known in the streets as a gangster rapper, record and shoot videos throughout the city of Watts and that’s when I knew I wanted to channel my emotions into music.

I started rapping when he was 14 years old and have since transitioned into singing. My street struggles have fueled my music career as I strived to make a name for myself so I could make it out. In 2013 I started attending The Los Angeles Recording School for audio engineering. During that time, I learned exactly what it took to make a record from start to finish, like how to record a vocalist, guitar, and drums to mixing and mastering through an SSL board. By 2017 I had 3 degrees in Audio Engineering, Music Production, and Entertainment Business.
While I was finishing up school, I started working on my own artistry and released 2 EP’s and a single under the name Novelle Vega. I also shot my first music video to my song called “The Edge” with the very talented Isaiah Taylor and was fortunate enough to sign my first publishing deal which landed me a placement on VH1’s “Black Ink Crew”.
After a bright and impactful start as Novelle Vega, I decided to change my name to SUMWHR and crafted a new melodic texture that takes you on a journey. I created a sound that is full of endless ear candy, catchy lyrics, and melodic vibes. When you hear one of my songs like Fake S**t, many draw familiar emotions with rocky relationships, resentment, and uncertainty of commitment. This then allowed me to collaborate with Mila J on her release of “Handsome” in 2018. Currently, I have been releasing a single every month while I work on my next EP.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been rocky along the way especially being from Watts. Growing up having to look over your shoulders everyday takes a tole on your mental state so to make it out for me was a blessing because many don’t. During the early stages of my career I have definitely gone through my fair share of obstacles. I started off as an apprentice to someone I respected as a producer and songwriter. I was able to help write and produce multiple tracks but he ended up stripping all of my credits on every one of the songs we worked on together. At the time, I was only 16 and didn’t have representation or any paperwork, so in essence I got taken advantage of. Being from LA is already hard on its own seeing as over the years LA has become so saturated with so many people trying to pursue a career in the music industry.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ode Republic – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
O.D.E. (Overnite Dreams Echo) Republic is a collective I started with my manager, Cara “Chanel” Catabay, and producer, Chris “ZooWill” Zuniga. We have created something that allows us to build our own independent label. Currently, we distribute our own music, specialize in music production and song-writing across many genres, and we develop artists and producers ensuring we are only giving the best industry quality sounds. Although we are still building O.D.E we plan to expand by partnering with a major label in the future.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Being that I’m born and raised in LA, I love that this city is so full of growth and opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to meet so many different people from all walks of life who come here with the same common goal as I have in music. This has allowed me to expand and get involved in many different genres and not get stuck in my Urban/ Hip-hop box.
Honestly, the only thing I dislike about LA is the traffic, no explanation needed. If you know you know!
Pricing:
- Vocal tracking $50 per hour
- Mixing $75+ per track
